INDIANAPOLIS - British rising
racing star Katherine Legge hopes to continue to
build on the skills she displayed this season while
competing in the Toyota Atlantic Championship Presented
by Yokohama and improve as a driver after being named
this year's recipient of the prestigious Gorsline
Scholarship award.
For
the 13th consecutive year the Gorsline Company
is providing the Scholarship to help develop and
enhance the skills of a talented, young racing
star both on and off the track. Awarded annually
to an aspiring driver "who consistently displays
exceptional talent and a professional respect for
motorsport," the Gorsline Scholarship is designed
to help its recipients refine their skills as they
continue to grow their racing careers. The Gorsline
Company is a longtime provider of insurance and
financial services for corporate and professional
clients, including many in the motorsports industry.
While becoming the first woman to ever win a major
open-wheel event in North America by claiming three
Atlantic victories and a third-place championship
finish in 2005, Legge displayed both the talent
and professionalism that embody the Gorsline Scholarship.
In being selected as this year's winner she joins
an impressive list of Gorsline Scholarship awardees,
including many with ties to the Champ Car Atlantic
Championship. Previous Scholarship winners and
Atlantic graduates include: Bryan Herta, Anthony
Lazzaro, Buddy Rice, David Besnard, Bryan Sellers,
Rocky Moran Jr. and Danica Patrick.
Legge will be presented with the Scholarship at
this weekend's Autosport Magazine Awards celebration
in London, England. Racing legend Sir Stirling
Moss will make the presentation of the award to
Legge, the 25-year-old native of Great Britain.
Legge will also be recognized for the Scholarship
during the annual American Auto Racing Writers
and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) banquet and
50th anniversary celebration of the organization
this Saturday in Indianapolis. Pam Griffith, co-owner
of Legge's Atlantic team, Polestar Racing Group,
will accept the award on Legge's behalf at the
AARWBA festivities. Charles Zwolsman, the 2005
Atlantic series champion, and Legge will also be
honored at the banquet for being named to this
season's All-American Auto Racing Team.
"Katherine had an outstanding season in 2005 on
many, many levels, not just in her driving skills," said
John Gorsline, President of the Gorsline Company. "She
did a tremendous job competing and representing
the best development series in the world today
in the Atlantic championship."
For earning the '06 Scholarship, Legge will participate
in two unique development programs designed to
further her skills as a racer. She will undergo
training and counseling in both the Speed Secrets
and Lyn St. James driver development initiatives,
which feature both mental and physical workshops
and coaching and mentoring specifically tailored
for Legge's career enhancement.
